Legend of the Mantamaji

Legend of Mantamaji has already been noticed by reviewers bigger than myself as it was named a must read this summer by BET. I was happy to pick it up and give it a read as the creators told me all about it and signed a copy for me. Eric Dean Seaton is no rookie to the entertainment industry, but this is his first comic book, and it’s surprisingly good.

You always have to expect the first version of someone’s first published work to have some rough edges and certainly there were times when I had to flip back through to make sure my assumptions about what was going on were correct. Even still, I enjoyed the characters, the story, and the artwork. I would love to see more one-page art-heavy panels for action, but I was not disappointed.

The main character and his girlfriend have an interesting relationship. They don’t know it right away, but they are working toward the same goal. At times she has the upper hand, but most of the time having super powers gives him the ultimate upper hand.

I thought it was interesting to see a black hero and a white villain. While the hero’s origin story plays to the stereotype of an underprivileged background, it didn’t come off clique.  To me it seems as though Eric has an intricate and exciting story to tell and has gotten much of the setup out of the way in the first book.

I’ll likely grab the second copy of the comic. It’s honestly an interesting read and I’m intrigued to see where the story goes.
