The Triton Fountain (also known as Spit and Spat)

The Triton Fountain (also known as Spit and Spat) is one of my favorite sculptures in Saratoga Springs. The long shallow pond is the perfect base for these matching depictions of the half-dolphin half-man son of Poseidon. They would almost look out of place were it not for the beautiful and well tended gardens throughout the park.

This Shinto shrine is well known for its many vermilion torri gates, but nobody mentions these small ones! I was pleasantly surprised when I realized the shrine was dedicated to foxes and made a little wish for Mr Fox back home. It seems that the fox is a symbol of agricultural prosperity as it communicates directly with the Shinto god of rice. I don't get the feeling Mr Fox back home knows this...

This kitty cat is just basking in the sun, but he's picked the absolute perfect spot. This is one of the many temples in Japan. It has multiple shrines where people can pay respects to their departed pets. The one on the right hand side (in the background) is for cats making it an apropos place for a cat nap.

The steam engine of the S.S. Sabino was fascinatin

The steam engine of the S.S. Sabino was fascinating to watch. The Sabino is a coal burning steamboat that was built in the early 1900's. It's one of the few historic landmarks in the US that you can catch a ride on and has been restored and preserved by the seaport museum which was a delight in itself to see. From the dock we could see numerous visiting vessels, the museum's own collection of ships, and the original whaling village perfectly preserved. We even caught a glimpse of some non-stinging jellyfish off the dock. A fantastic place to visit in Mystic!

Did you know there is a medieval castle in Napa? It was built just ten years ago with authentic materials from Europe. All the beams and stones have been hand-cut. Most were salvaged from decrepit historic structures.
