Appreciating and Loving People is What Valentines Day is About

February is a great time to think about all the relationships in your life. I coincidentally happened to get a timely book out of the library this week. I didn’t know what it was about, but the cover looked interesting. Yes, I judge books by their cover! The book is called Every Day by David Levithan and I wanted to share a few powerful excerpts that made me pause while reading.

“What is is about the moment you fall in love? How can such a small measure of time contain such enormity? I suddenly realize why people believe in deja vu, why people believe they’ve lived past lives, because there is no way the years I’ve spent on this earth could possibly encapsulate what I’m feeling.

McDonald’s announced a new CEO, the only breaking news of today

Today McDonalds announced their new CEO, Steve Easterbrook. Of course congratulations are in order, but this isn’t Steve’s first time being in the C-suite. I don’t often publicize the fact that I love mcnuggies and a shamrock shake now and then, mostly because younger generations aren’t in love with McDonalds like our parents were.

Steve has already mentioned that he is trying to win the hearts of millennials everywhere, but just what would it take to get people on board with McDonald’s brand again? Obviously they have done a great job removing the traditional Ronald and pals from most establishments, and some of their newer locations are downright trendy! [More]

Why Miss Piggy is the Best Female Role Model

Winter is back, and Disney Frozen merchandise is everywhere. It’s a successful franchise founded on the view that the females characters are good role models for young girls. It’s easy to see how many movies have flat female characters, and sometimes, even when you think you have a strong female lead in a movie or TV show, on further investigation it’s not true. I believe Frozen is a step in the right direction, but there is an unsung star that should really be known as the best female role model, Miss Piggy. [More]

Building Effective Teams to Boost Morale

While this segment from the IT Crowd pokes fun at teams and teamwork it is a very real and important part of a good work environment. Not everyone will be able to do everything, and once you hire people you may find they don’t fit into the workplace like you imagined. A good leader however understands the strengths and weaknesses of each team member and rearranges groups to boost morale knowing that increases to productivity will follow. There is an endless list of pitfalls you can face when building teams, here are a sample of common problems and solutions. [More]

Google – They’re Everywhere

Google has become a crazy big company in my lifetime. When they didn’t exist and the internet was still so new, I remember all the other search networks you would have to use to find what you were looking for. Having google to care more about useful search metrics and less about ad revenue was a blessing.

Since then, they have slowly entered every part of our lives online and off with great ease. Android phones, Glass, and the new pro type car would mean that one company would have data on you from every aspect of your life. [More]

4 Airplane Assholes to Avoid Being

I have been flying more and more these days, and the whole experience is still amazing to me. We are able to jettison a huge hunk of metal in the air and then safely drop it from the sky exactly where we want. You get such a great view from up there and the only thing that can ruin it for me are the people I’m sharing that great experience with.

Entitled boarding groupies

When it comes to boarding by your group most people seem to think this is more of a suggestion than a requirement. Somehow “group 3” seems to be three times the size of group 4 and 5 combined. [More]

Weekend Project: Sanding My Maverick

I should have posted before, but the VW bus was painted a little while back. It looks much better in green and white than it did in bright red! The interior still needs some cleaning, but I enjoy doing the interior work so I will probably have that taken care soon enough.

The next car in line for a paint-job is my 1970 Maverick Grabber! Last winter, I removed the whole interior and replaced, patched, and protected every surface. Once I do the same on the outside I might be able to call this project car done! I plan to repaint it in the same color, or as close to the same color as possible. [More]

New Cellphone

So I recently went on an adventure or sorts to get a new cellphone. I had never had a problem with Verizon, but I wanted to upgrade from my old flip phone to a more functional smartphone. As much as I wanted to get on Sprint’s unlimited data plan, they just didn’t cover my area well. I ended up with the Motorola Atrix 2 (now I’m a moto-head and a motar-head) on AT&T. I think I can live with it, but after the month-long phone-swapping, carrier-switching adventure I have gained a lot more interest in cellphones.

I think the interest comes in part from the Consumer Electronics Show. [More]

2012 – Happy New Year

Another new year is upon us and it would seem everyone is busy making new years resolutions, best of 2011 lists, and predicting 2012. We all want the new year to be better than the last, and goal setting is how we aim to better ourselves.

Before making my goals for the new year, I took a moment to reflect on how much I have accomplished this year. Outdoor adventures like skydiving, spelunking, and jet skiing filled the year with excitement. I am also proud of learning to cook healthy meals and building an exercise routine that fits my lifestyle. [More]

Interesting Article: Empathetic Rats

I highly recommend you read the full article for this. It is fascinating that these rats would be able to understand the pain of their friends and help them. I think the truly amazing part of the study is that when made to choose between setting their friend free and sharing food, eating the food and then freeing their friend, or eating the food and not freeing their friend, more than half the rats shared the food with their buddy! I always knew rats were smart, but I didn’t think of them as empathetic until now.

Weekend Project: Sanding the VW Bus

Weekends are always busy for me. I have to take care of all those things in the week I was too tired to do after work like laundry, dishes, and cleaning in general. But every so often I catch-up with my to-do list and have some time for a weekend project. This weekend I am sanding down a VW Bus. I plan to replace all the red with the original paint scheme of green and white. Then when that’s all done, I can redo the interior. That’s always my favorite part! [More]
